Dr. David Ores on Clinton St. (Lower East Side) is a "neighborhood doctor" who is well known for treating people without insurance or money. I've seen him a few times for simple things like getting antibiotics. He charged me twice (like $40) but didn't charge me at all two other times. Make sure you mention you have no insurance/money. He's very anti-smoking so if you are a smoker be prepared for a lecture. Do a search on his name and you'll find articles about what he does for people and how he's 'against the system'.

(other than that, I've given a fake name at the hospital before when I had a kidney infection and needed antibiotics but it's "wrong" so I wouldn't recommend that!)

Talk to the secretary in your doctor's office, and find out if they offer a patient financial assistance program. Some have what is called Charity Financial Assistance. When I lost my ins., I called to find out how much a visit would be, and when I explained my situation to the secretary, she told me about the plan. I would have never known if she had not offered it to me. God bless her! I was sicker than I realilzed. Best wishes.

Do you have a doctor that you have been seeing?
When I lost my insurance, I simply phoned my doctor for my annual and she gave me a break on the cost and I paid cash.

Doctors can't turn you away because you don't have insurance. Hopefully when you go to a doctor, when it's time to leave and pay the bill you can request the bill you and then you can just make payments until it's paid off. Another option (I'm a nurse) is to go in, see the doctor, get your prescription and then when you get to the window to pay, look in your purse and tell them you forgot your money/checkbook/bankcard and they'll HAVE to bill you. They'll put up a small fight, but if you don't have the money, you don't have it...period. We have people do that all the time. And you'll already have your prescription...so good luck to you!
