The Health Care Crisis: 47 Million Can’t Afford to Get Sick

America’s health system is in crisis, leaving out too many and costing too much. 47 million Americans lack health insurance. Millions more are struggling to pay premiums that are growing five times faster than wages, but still seeing their benefits shrink. While some Americans have access to the most sophisticated medical care in the world, others are left to overcrowded emergency rooms, under-funded clinics, or no health care at all – all because they lack the insurance it takes to provide for the care they need. This is wrong. It violates America’s deep, long-standing commitment to fairness for all of our citizens – old and young, weak and strong. Unlocking our health care system’s potential for everyone in America is the great moral challenge of our time. Center for American Progress Health Policy Director Karen Davenport explains what’s at stake as President Bush prepares to deliver his final State of the Union address in ASK THE EXPERT, CAP’s new video feature.

If I get sick, get treatment, it comes out of other people’s taxes. Healthcare here stinks. I have seen some pretty bad things. I am a visiting nurse. I visit home and hospitals via request. I asked a nurse for a razor for a PT that had a right to feel and look better. I was told to go to 7-11. It is not just the big things, it also the small things.

Hey, whoo69, why don’t you name your, “authoritative” sources, so all of us can have a look? Perhaps your are not so sure about those facts? Or maybe, you don’t want someone to discredit your sources?

Comments made by people like ‘alanaldasucks’ are most likely on a payroll of a neo-con think tank, or they are just really uninformed, undereducated, mentally ill people who’s IQ’s are about 70, 80 at the most. A lot of them are 20 somethings who are loosers, & also think they will never need care, or have contributed nothing to society, and never will, yet we carry them on our backs, so they talk like brainless idiots. Ignorance should be painful.

As someone who works only just above minimum wage, as someone FORCED to work 6 to 7 days a week just to survive, as someone who suffered horrible pain for months and almost DIED because I couldn’t afford ANY medical care–I find the right wing propaganda SICKENING! WE need national health care. To deny NHS to Americans is to be a **** pig.

karenhearts99 November 12, 2008 at 11:19 am

If i get sick i get treatment for free england and it comes out of taxs.

im not bitching about anything. okay but people are dying because we have horrible health care. im not saying we have to expect the government to do everything or provide all the money. but its not impossible. other countries have done it there is no reason to why we cant achieve it.

alanaldasucks November 18, 2008 at 11:56 pm

that war is a different situation than health care.you can’t ecpect the government to throw the kind of money they used for the war on health care.even if there wasn’t a war and they did use that money for health care then you would be bitching about the value of the dollar. the government is not repsonsible for health care and can never be.

lovediana22 November 19, 2008 at 2:22 pm

what is it that you understand that i dont

alanaldasucks November 21, 2008 at 11:45 pm

you dont understand how the government and business work do you?

lovediana22 November 23, 2008 at 1:36 am

why is the government paying 3 billion to help people with diseases caused by smoking?and about the same amount for alcohol related diseases?
what about the war?
how is it NOT affordable?

alanaldasucks November 24, 2008 at 12:12 pm

so if you cant afford something the government should give it to you? how is that going to work? where is the government going to get the money?

lovediana22 November 25, 2008 at 9:20 am

no but not every one can afford to pay 500 dollars or more a month for health insurance that doesn’t cover anything leading people to not be able to pay any other bills. the government actually spends more then half of the money we pay on things not related to health insurance. its pathetic. not only does it put people one sickness away from bankruptcy but it also just gives more money to the goverment

PitoDaddy November 26, 2008 at 3:08 am

I just read a news report today that the Health Net insurance company was ordered by an arbitration judge to pay a woman $9 million for canceling her policy while she was undergoing ****** cancer treatment. This is truly a happy ending to her situation. We do have a crisis in this country. Insurance companies are pulling this crap all the time. I wonder how many people have died after having their insurance canceled when they needed to use it. It’s a damn disgrace. All for profit.

alanaldasucks November 28, 2008 at 10:18 pm

so the government should provide everything? maybe the government should provide me with a job, money, a house, etc. the constitution does not mention health care, dont twist the words to ake it sound like it does, health care should be private, government will hinder the advancements of the health care system by limiting profits

siszam November 30, 2008 at 12:33 am

Maybe would show provide for the general welfare of all citizens like more civilized nations do or like the constitution says. The government of the people, by the people should work for the general welfare of the people. We are the United States not the Each Man On His Own states.

alanaldasucks December 2, 2008 at 5:26 am

maybe everybody should be responsible for their own health care

Whoo69 December 2, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Look, it’s undeniable we need healthcare reform. But please don’t mislead the people by inflating the number of uninsured! If you’d bother to read authoritative sources on uninsured Americans, the number is much closer to one-third of 47 million. Just for reference and truth’s sake. You don’t need to lie to get your agenda through.
